BRAVO BILLIES

Dine here at night, and you could be on  your best friend's lawn. Well, that's if your best friend lives right on the beach, because here is basically an ex-beach kiosk with open air dining. We took a visitor to Sydney there the other night. After a walk on pocket-sized Bilgola Beach (Billies, if you are a surfer) we trudged back up the sands to our table reserved for us on a small deck. The place was packed (always book, we were advised) and we’d been rung to ask us to be there no later than 7.30pm when last orders are taken. It would be hard to find a more laid-back evening menu anywhere in Sydney. The tiny choice for Wednesday to Saturday nights (Tuesday is seafood) was an antipasto plate for two or four, and two sorts of spaghetti – vegetarian or prawn. Somehow it didn’t matter and we got creative anyway by mixing sausage and smoked chicken from the enormous antipasto platter for two into the vegetarian spaghetti. A basket of good bread that accompanied the antipasti mopped up the tasty sauces and when that was done we sat back too full for dessert or the signature hot chocolate, just soaking up the scene, and the feeling we had crashed someone’s private beachside retreat.

Bilgola Beach Kiosk, Bilgola Beach, 9973 1988. BYO. Breakfast and lunch daily; Dinner Tuesday to Saturday from 5pm.
