MAKAN@ALICE’S

When you’re on a foodie tour, as I was recently, and someone gives you a hot tip, you should take notice.

“You must go to Alice’s,” the woman next to me said. She appeared to be Malaysian, and here she was recommending a Malaysian place. Had to be good.

“The food is just like Malaysia,” she went on.

Good enough for me, and so we went this week. And yes, the place is unpretentious, and it is so noisy with other happy diners you can hardly hear yourself talk. But then I was eating too happily to talk anyway.

Alice’s trademark is good nonya and hawker style food such as nasi lemak, nasi goreng, noodles, soup, and daily specials. Then, to finish, Malaysian comfort foods feature – cendol, ice kachang and  nonya cakes. Memo: order the nonya desserts at the beginning as they had run out by the time we ordered after we’d finished the main course.

Makan means ‘eat’ in Malaysian, so this is simply: Eat at Alice’s. As I will again.

Makan@Alice’s, Alice and Paul Tan, Shop 3&4, corner Bellevue Street and Pennant Hills Road, Thornleigh, 02 9484 8288, open Lunch (11.30am to 3pm) Tuesday to Sunday. www.aliceskuih.com.au
