TOP END - TOP CLASSMat Daniel meets us at the 4WD which has collected us from the charter aircraft just 200 metres or so from the homestead. We have just come from Cairns, 45 minutes away. By air. By road it’s 300 or so kilometres. Mat is the GM of Wrotham Park Station, but he looks every inch the outback station owner from central casting: RM Williams-clad from his hat to boots, wide smile, tanned face and, most importantly, the friendly outback welcome. We have seen the North Queensland countryside morph amazingly since leaving Cairns, first rugged tropical rainforest hugging the coast, then undulating pasture, flattening further as we approach the station. As we circled the homestead and the guest quarters ranged along the banks of the Mitchell River, we could see the way erosion had scored the 30-metre high brick red cliffs into surreal stalagmite-like shapes. …………… This article continues with details of the luxury accommodation and dining at the station and its history and also includes information on the activities available. ……………….. (finishes…) Breakfasts in the cool of the morning before the day heats up are even more special, with jugs of juice, tropical fruit, freshly baked pastries and bread, and the cooked-to-order Bushman’s Brekkie. Oh, and good coffee. We could have lingered for hours as it seemed nothing was too much trouble for our laid-back country hosts. Too soon it was time for us to leave. Mat and the staff stood at the homestead steps and waved us off. They looked genuinely sorry to see us go. We were too. ©Sally Hammond 2006 Picture Credits: ©Gordon Hammond 2006 (Sally and Gordon Hammond travelled as guests of Voyages Resorts) ………………..
